So what is YWAM, or you may be wondering how do I even pronounce that word?? YWAM says it best so i'll just quote them. "Youth With A Mission is an international volunteer missions movement of Christians from many backgrounds, cultures and traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM (pronounced “Y – wam”), our purpose is simply to know God and to make Him known." YWAM currently operates in more than 1,500 locations in at least 187 countries worldwide, with a staff of over 20,000 volunteers from 200 nations and various denominations." (for more info visit www.ywam.org ) I've been a part of this non profit since August 2015, living in Kona Hawaii as a staff member with Holoholo Ministries. (check out our ministry page here www.holoholoministries.com) I work here in the local community of Kona as well as oversees praying and seeking to make Jesus and His hope and love known wherever He has me.
How did I get involved in missions? Funny you should ask!
February 2013, I went on a week long missions trip to serve at an orphanage in Haiti. I clearly remember being there and saying, "God, if missions is what you are calling me into, whether it be full time, more short term trips, or even just supporting other missionaries, I am saying YES to you now." And now here I am two years later typing up this blog page to share about where that prayer has taken me. In Haiti, the Lord gave me a glimpse of His heart for His hurting and lost children who don't know about Him and His unconditional love and that's where this passion and love for the mission field began to bloom in my life.
After graduating high school in May 2013, I had no idea what to do! I tried just picking random careers and colleges and was like "sure, I could do that.." but nothing was working out and nothing was exciting me. I was spending a lot of time, energy and emotions trying to please myself and trying to please the people that I loved in my decision making. Everybody had their own opinion of what was best for me, and I just had no idea. Looking back I know that so much time and stress, for myself and everyone who knows me and was trying to help me to decide what to do with my life, could have been avoided had I simply said "God, what is Your best for my life? How can I bring Your name the highest glory and enjoy this gift of life?"
I didn't do that though... Not for awhile anyways, but when I finally did, guess what?? My good heavenly father answered! He showed me how He has always been by my side, even when I am not listening to His voice and going the opposite way of what He knows is best for me, He's there. He's been pursing my heart since He had the thought to create me. He created me fearfully and wonderfully and He enjoys doing life with me. And with Him I am not limited. In my search of that terrible "so, whats next" question after high school, I was about to settle with my plans and tell God, "nah, even though You're like creator of the whole universe, I don't want what you have for me... yeah, i think i'll just figure this one out. Thanks though!"
After I surrendered my plans to God and asked Him to direct my steps, my heart for missions began to swell up again. I was so anxious to go! I finally had peace that the college route wasn't for me, or at least not right now and I knew that God was preparing me for missions. Long story shortened, after lots of praying and lotsss of waiting and even more trusting- the doors for YWAM flew open wide! September 2014, I found myself stepping off the plane in Kona Hawaii for DTS ( discipleship training school) at the University of the Nations, where my relationship with Jesus grew leaps and bounds. Jesus walked me through what intimacy with Him is. The Lord answered my prayer for boldness to share my faith like I never have before. I got to be a part of team and a family that walks in unity. I was stretched, challenged, pushed, encouraged and blessed like I never experienced before. God blew my mind those 3 months in Hawaii, and then blew my mind over and over again the next 2 months in the Philippines and Thailand. God clearly called me into missions, and ya know, I just dont hear Him calling me out of it.
As children of God, He's already called each of us and that burning in our souls "to go" is already there, will we follow? (Matthew 4:14)
So, whether it be in Hawaii, the hill tribes of Northern Thailand, my workplace, school, community or family I know that I am meant to be a missionary.
My heart behind each word that I type is to encourage you and stir you on in your personal relationship with Jesus and point to Gods wonder, goodness, and love as I shared briefly about what He is doing in my life. He has such amazing special things just for you!
